An annual Holocaust commemoration program, sponsored by the Young Israel of Midwood, will be held at 8 p.m., May 18 in the synagogue’s social hall, 1694 Ocean Avenue.
The story of Jewish survival in Shanghai will be told in excerpts from personal testimony and memoirs, and in a documentary film, “Ghetto Shanghai.”
Shanghai, the only place in the world that accepted immigrants without visas, was a haven for 18,000 German and Austrian Jews who arrived there during the 1930s, and 2,000 Polish and Lithuanian Jews, including students of the famed Mir Yeshiva, who arrived in late 1940 and early 1941.
Memorial candles will be lit by members of the synagogue who are Holocaust survivors. The program is free and open to the public. It is suitable for all ages.
