Horrifying mugging near YMCA

A woman was carried into an alley and beaten by two thugs on a busy stretch of Ninth Street late on Aug. 18.

The 20-year-old victim told cops that she had left the YMCA, which is between Fifth and Sixth avenues, at just before midnight when she was set upon by two men, whom she described as 18-year-olds.

One of the men grabbed her from behind while the other showed off a blunt instrument and then grabbed her legs. After carrying her into the alleyway, both men beat her about the head, causing “redness and swelling.”

She broke away from her assailants and ran home, but the perps got away with her cellphone.

Burgs in burg

There were at least three burglaries in the area last week. Here’s how they went down:

• A Fourth Street house was broken into on Aug. 17 while its owners were on vacation, cops said. Thieves had entered the house by forcing open the iron bars on a security gate and then breaking through a glass door. They got away with a laptop computer and a mountain bike.

• An apartment on Prospect Park West was broken into on Aug. 17 after perps broke through a rear window at the building, which is between 12th and 13th streets. Thieves got away with a trove of electronics, including two laptops and an iPod.

• A thief impersonating a Housing Authority exterminator tricked a resident of the Wyckoff Houses into letting him into her apartment on Aug. 17.

The thug didn’t steal anything, but used an unidentified weapon to injure the 45-year-old woman.

Cops are looking for a 6-foot, 200-pound black man with brown eyes, black hair, close cut hair and “blotchy” skin.

Farm aid

A thief took advantage of the situation on Aug. 18, taking a woman’s handbag after she set it down on the ground to shop at the farmer’s market in Grand Army Plaza.

The Sixth Avenue woman told cops that she put the bag down at around 1 pm and lost a cellphone, her wallet, various ID cards and the handbag itself.

Gave it up

A trio of hoods mugged a man on 13th Street after surrounding him and demanding cash on Aug. 16.

The 22-year-old victim told cops that he was approaching the corner of Fifth Avenue at around 2:30 am when the threesome surrounded him and one man asked, “Where’s the money?”

The victim answered succinctly: “The wallet is in my back right pocket,” he said.

One of the thugs took the wallet — which contained $40 — and all three fled up 13th Street towards Prospect Park, cops said.

The man could only describe two of his assailants: a 5-foot-10, 250-pound black man, age 19, with short brown hair; and a 5-foot-6, 150-pound Asian man with short brown hair. He had no description on the third man, whom police described as a lookout.

Some armory

For the second week in a row, a crime has been reported at the armory complex on Eighth Avenue and 14th Street — this time, the theft of hundreds of dollars worth of copper wiring.

Sometime between Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, a thief broke into a locked storage room at the armory, which houses a woman’s shelter and is being converted into a sports complex.

The manager of the company installing electrical equipment in the building told cops that many people had access to the area around the storage room during the period that the crime went down — but only he has the key to the room itself. He told police that the door was indeed secure during the entire weeklong period.

That explains why cops later found that a portion of wall had been removed, giving the thief access to the room — and the 37 spools of copper wiring that he stole.

Cops say that a price hike in copper has led to a rash of such thefts at construction sites.

“It’s more valuable than gold,” said one officer in a neighboring precinct. “And the thieves know it.”

YM ouch A

A thief was obviously working the locker room at a popular YMCA on Ninth Street because several men reported that their stuff had been stolen while they worked out on Aug. 18.

The victims told cops that they re-entered the locker room at around 4:30 pm after their workouts and discovered the thefts.

In one case, three people had stashed their stuff in one locker. That trio lost cash, credit cards, a library card, a cellphone and a pair of designer shorts.

The other victim, a 67-year-old, said he lost credit cards, his keys, a cellphone and $60.

In both cases, the padlocks had been cut.

The wheel deal

In what has become a weekly Police Blotter staple, at least three more cars were stolen off Park Slope streets last week. Here’s a round-up (no pun intended):

• A 10th Street man parked his 1995 Acura near his home, between Fifth and Sixth avenues on Aug. 6 at around 4 pm. When he went to move it a week later, it was gone.

• On the same block, a woman parked her 1997 Dodge Caravan on Aug. 12 at around 11:30 pm. When she returned to it just six hours later, it was gone.

• A Long Island woman parked her 1997 Infinity on Eighth Avenue on Aug. 13 at around 1 am. But when she returned to the spot, which was near the corner of Fourth Street, two days later, the car (and the two child seats in the back) was gone.
