In P.S. 207’s corner

To The Editor:

First, as an editorial policy, I would recommend that letters that the writer does not want to own up to and sign their name, should not be given a public platform in a widely-read community paper.

It is unfortunate that there are factions in the community that are bent on saying nothing positive about Public School 207.

Either it is the garbage or the proposed playground, there are people in this community who view the school through a narrow band of cynicism.

The “Name Withheld” letter, entitled “Stinky First Day” portrayed PS 207 as a “mismanaged, visually unappealing dump.”

This could not be farther from the truth and this statement is made with such ignorance of the truly exceptional school that PS 207 is. Not only is it one of the highest performing schools in the city, but it has been cited many times for the wonderful sense of patriotism that it displays on its face and in its heart. What is unappealing is the state of the playground which is a blacktop nightmare of pot holes and broken fences.

When the city proposed a renovated playground the same neighbors that complain about the “visually appealing dump” vigorously opposed the renovation project. So, instead of a beautiful playground filled with trees, a garden, and play equipment where our children can enjoy some time outdoors, they would rather look at a barren yard.

I invite anyone to visit PS 207 and see that it is not a visually unappealing dump, in fact, it is a special place of learning. This is a credit to the wonderful staff, teachers, and parent volunteers that give their all for a community school that makes this a desirable neighborhood to live in.
