Outstanding!
Three cheers and congratulations are due Nicole Lopez, a kindergarten teacher at Park Slope School 282. The borough educator was awarded the inaugural Sanford Teacher Award, and is a recipient of $10,000 bucks.
October 23 was an ordinary day in the classroom for the kindergarten teacher until she was surprised in front of her students with an oversized check when she was named one of the most inspiring teachers in the nation by the National University System.
On hand to share in the event was Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, president of Long Island University — a founding member of Sanford Education Collaborative; Dr. Michael Cunningham, chancellor of the National University System, and that friendly green alien “Z” from the Sanford Harmony storybook series.
“Today, I am honored to take part in recognizing one of the outstanding educators we work with in New York City Schools,” said Dr. Cline. “I have had the pleasure of witnessing first-hand the way Ms. Lopez engages with her students, and it is amazing to see an inclusive classroom where children work together and truly support one another.”
Additionally, she qualifies for the $50,000 national Sanford Teacher Award competition, which will be granted to a single winner.
The national campaign is led by the National University System/Sanford Programs, and offered in honor of philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, the visionary behind the Sanford Programs.
