Institute debuts new garden

A former Institute for Community Living executive, who successfully solicited a $100,000 improvement grant for the Coney Island residence, reaped the fruits of her labors when the institute dedicated its new garden in her honor.

Ex-Chief Administrative Officer Ellen Witzling Roff, who had secured the funds from former Assemblymember Adele Cohen, was among attendees at a garden-naming and ribbon-cutting celebration at the facility, 2372 West 12th Street, which houses nine adult men and women with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities.

In addition to creating “The Ellen Witzling Roff Garden,” a lush oasis of plants, brickwork and patio furniture from a previously unused concrete space, the money was used to install wooden floors, upgrade the kitchen and purchase a van to transport clients.
