Internet safety tips

Assemblywoman Joan Millman and Brooklyn District Attorney Charles “Joe” Hynes hosted an informative Internet safety seminar for parents at Public School 58, 330 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens.

The presentation was part of an effort by the DA’s Cyber Crimes Bureau to significantly reduce Internet crimes committed against children. Through sharing tips with parents, the DA’s office hopes to diminish “digital divide” between a generation that grew up with the Internet and parents who are less familiar with technology.

“I commend District Attorney Hynes for bringing this issue to the forefront of many parents’ minds,” Millman said. “Thanks to this initiative, parents in Brooklyn are becoming more aware of safe ways for their children to use the web. The Internet is such a valuable educational tool, but parents must provide their children guidance.”

Some important tips for parents include establishing rules for Internet use, opening a dialogue with their children about their online activities, placing the computer in a common room, not in the child’s bedroom, keeping informed about your child’s Internet usage, ensuring the child knows not to divulge personal information to an unknown source, and be aware of any other locations where your child may also use the Internet.
