IT’S ONLY MY OPINION – Meet the Press struggles with void

Another great American loss — Tony Snow — Age 53. The following are quotes from some of the accolades heaped upon the committed conservative the day he passed away.

“…a genuine, sincere friend to all.”

“Tony enjoyed his work and loved the people around him, even those of us who are liberal.”

“Never had a bad word to say about anybody.”

“Integrity, courage, charismatic.”

“Tony was an honest man.”

“He made his job interesting and entertaining even after he became ill.”

“A joy to be with even if we opposed regularly … a gentleman.”

“…an elegant man.”

You might find it interesting to know that all of the quotes I selected came from Beckel, Plante, Powers and other “opponents” on the left. Tony himself gave us the best quote of all. “Enjoy every minute while you’re alive.”

Absolutely. My sentiments exactly. Whatever it is that you love, enjoy it today. You may not be here tomorrow.

I am one of the many millions who will also miss Tim Russert. Although he was liberal he was not a staunch, hating, abusive, name-calling left-winger. He was one of the fairest interviewers and no doubt one of the most loved, even by those he disagreed with.

Tom Brokaw, ho-hum, is sitting in on Meet The Press until after the election. I, like so many of you, will be channel hopping and reading the Sunday comics at the same time.

The word around town is that Steve Capus, president of NBC News, is considering David Gregory, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann or Andrea Mitchell as permanent host. Gregory is liberal and shows it in his questioning. He’s not well liked. Motor-mouth Matthews makes a five-minute speech for what could be or should be a twenty-word, ten-second question. Scratch him. Olbermann? He is a perfect example of the words I used above: “A staunch, hating, abusive, name calling…” His attitude doesn’t fly. Just look at Keith’s very low ratings compared to his competition. Then think about the ineffectiveness of the failed Air America.

Hey, there, President Capus. I’d like to see you go with Andrea Mitchell. At the worst I would find myself channel hopping and reading the Sunday comics.

An AT&T Internet poll asked, “Currently, seven states have laws against using handheld cell phones while driving. Should this ban be applied to all states?”

“The ban should only be applied to texting.” That answer came from 16 percent of the more than seven thousand who responded.

“Yes! Using them creates a dangerous distraction” was the response from a whopping 74 percent — and I’m one of them.

Only 8 percent whimpered, “No. I don’t think it’s a problem.”

Really? Not a problem? Tell that to your insurance company. Tell it to the driver behind you trying to make time while you’re engrossed in a phone conversation crawling along in the left lane at 10 miles per hour below the speed limit. Then tell it to the woman who, after a serious accident, was removed unconscious from her auto with her hand still clutching her phone.

Nancy Pelosi refuses to allow an energy bill to come to the floor because she is afraid that drilling will be attached to it. She doesn’t have the votes to stop the drilling so she prefers to do nothing.

At this moment the approval rating of the United States Congress under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi (and Harry Reid) has sunk to a new low 9 percent. Maybe if this useless leadership had some meaningful discussion about drilling for oil instead of a windfall profits tax they might pick up a point or two.

I am StanGershbein@Bellsouth.net again asking Senator Schumer to please explain, in simple English, how a windfall profits tax is going to help me at the pump.
