Jaison Vilera, league leader in ERA, throws seven shutout innings in Cyclones win

Cyclones 7

West Virginia 1

July 29 in West Virginia

Jaison Vilera smoked the Black Bears Sunday night, striking out eight while giving up just two hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings, improving his league-leading earned-run average to 0.78.

Brooklyn took the lead in the third when Jose Miguel Medina singled home Manny Rodriguez who had doubled, with Medina reaching second on the throw home. Carlos Cortes then sent Medina home when he reached on a fielding error, before Wagner Lagrange doubled to plate Cortes and give the Clones a 3–0 lead.

Our boys scored one in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Chase Chambers doubled to leadoff the eighth before Brian Sharp singled to move him to third and Nick Meyer reached on an error to send him home. After West Virginia walked in a run, Medina grounded out to knock in Brian Sharp and make it 7–0.

Ryley Gilliam took over for Vilera in the eighth and pitched for one inning, before Ryan Selmer took over in the ninth and gave up West Virginia’s lone run.

Our boys return home tonight to face Tri-City at 7 pm at MCU Park for the start of a six-game home stand.
