Brooklyn’s Jewish War Veterans are quite busy this spring.
First off, Kings County Commander of the Jewish War Veterans Phillip Dorf installed new commander, Joel Shantzer, thereby passing the torch of authority to a new commander with new ideas and objectives for the veterans.
Additionally, the youngsters from PS 255, 1866 East 17th Street, presented a special assembly honoring the vets in a show entitled “We The People,” highlighting the events of 2007-2008. The children delivered a wonderful performance, to the delight of the veterans.
In attendance were Past Commander Phillip Dorf, as well as Past Commander David Glass, Past Kings County Commander Bernard Rothenberg, and Past Commander Jack Panzer of Post #129. Each of the veterans were asked to reflect on their experiences during their years in military service.
Finally, as per one of Murray H. Liebowitz-Skolnick Post #129’s annual traditions, members of the Post presented packages to needy families in Brooklyn. The recipients were chosen by local religious leaders and the packages were then assembled and delivered.
This year the Post delivered to more than 50 families, with each package containing in excess of 20 items.
Veterans reaped the rewards of their generosity when they saw the smiles on the faces of families, who otherwise would not have been able to eat were it not for their spirit of giving.
