’JEWS OF BROOKLYN’

A lecture, slide presentation and reception marked the official
opening of the photo exhibit, "Jews of Brooklyn," on
Feb. 6, at the Selena Gallery in the Downtown Brooklyn campus
of Long Island University.



The exhibit highlights the diversity of Jewish secular and religious
life in Brooklyn over several decades. It combines the work of
prominent photographers, such as Jerry Dantzic, Arthur Leipzig
and Harvey Wang, along with many other talented photographers,
including Farhad Farhadi, Stuart Fishelson, Melanie Einzig, and
Miriam Rubinoff.



The evening began with a lecture by Andre Aciman, who spoke on
"The Meaning of Memory and Place." A celebrated author,
Aciman writes for many publications, including The New York Times
and The New Yorker, and is the author of "Out of Egypt,
A Memoir and False Papers" and "Essays on Exile and
Memory."



Leipzig then gave a slide presentation on his decades-long project
photographing Jews around the world. A professor of photography
at LIU’s C.W. Post Campus, Leipzig has had his work exhibited
at museums and galleries in this country and abroad.



A packed reception for the artists followed the presentation,
which featured Klezmer music by musician Peter Sokolow.



Brooklyn campus professors Stuart Fishelson, Jan Rosenberg, Rodney
Hurley and Nancy Grove curated the show together with Ilana Abramovitch,
co-editor of the book "Jews of Brooklyn."
