The Brooklyn
Museum of Art is hosting a colorful Mardi Gras-Carnival party
on March 1, 5-11 pm, as part of its monthly First Saturday series.
Don’t be afraid to dress the part; the Carnival costume contest
will be judged from 9 pm to 9:45 pm.
Among the evening’s highlights are New Orleans jazz performed
live by Jeff Newell’s New-Trad Octet, at 6 pm, and a West African
dance and drumming show by Sidiki Conde and Toukounou, at 7 pm.
At 9 pm, a Brooklyn Historical Society curator will discuss the
history of women in Brooklyn and the Brooklyn International Film
Festival will present a film about the first Afro-Brazilian woman
elected to Brazil’s Senate, Benedita da Silva.
Free Brazilian dance lessons will be offered at 8 pm, followed
by Ogans (pictured) – regulars at SOB’s and Elbow Room – playing
Afro-Brazilian Carnival music from 9 pm to 11 pm.
The museum is located at 200 Eastern Parkway. Admission is free.
