The Belmont Stakes, the last leg of horse racing’s “Triple Crown,” takes place on June 6. The next day, the first leg of the “Brooklyn Triple Crown” will commence with the (two−legged) running of the Kenneth Dolan Memorial 5k run in Prospect Park.
Put together by the Coney Island Sports Foundation, the “Triple Crown” will feature Dolan run, the Cosme 5k run (Sunday, June 28) and the Police Officer Christopher Hoban 5−Mile run (Sunday, September 20).
The Dolan run, celebrating its 20th anniversary, honors a Windsor Terrace resident who had recently graduated from Iona College when he died in a 1990 car accident at the age of 23.
An avid runner, Dolan had completed two marathons. The race to honor him starts at 10 a.m. at Bartel Pritchard Square, in Prospect Park, near the corner of 15th Street and Prospect Park West, and will loop around the park and back to the same location.
Proceeds from the run go towards a scholarship fund for Iona College. To date, money raised from the event has paid for a college education for four people, and a master’s degree for one person.
The Cosme run, in its 17th year, is named after the event’s benefactor, Edwin Cosme, a Coney Island business owner and community advocate who is Founding Chairperson of the Coney Island Sports Foundation, the organizing body behind the “Triple Crown.”
That run will start at 9:30 a.m. at West 19th Street, on the Coney Island Boardwalk. Because it is an “out and back course,” runners will run along the Boardwalk to Brighton 15th Street before doubling back.
Proceeds for the race will benefit the Coney Island Sports Foundation.
The last leg of the Triple Crown, the Police Officer Chris Hoban Memorial Run, honors a Police Officer whose life was lost in the line of duty in 1988.
Hoban, a graduate of Xaverian High School, was an undercover officer in the NYPD Narcotics Division. During a “buy and bust” operation, he was shot dead at the age of 26.
The run to honor him – which has become a Bay Ridge tradition – begins at Xaverian, his alma mater, at 71st Street and Shore Road, at 10 am. It goes out along the Shore Road Promenade bicycle path and returns along 3rd Avenue.
Proceeds will benefit the Christopher Hoban Foundation, a scholarship fund at Xaverian High School.
After each race, trophies will be given out to those who have placed in the top five in the following age categories: 12 and under; 13−15; 16−19; 20−29; 30−39; 40−49; 50−59; 60−69; and over 70. Each race has shorter “Pee Wee” runs for children 12 and under.
And on November 13, from 8 p.m. until midnight, Cosme will hold an awards banquet, open to all those who placed in the top five in these divisions. The event will take place at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island (2911 West 15th Street), and will include dinner and dancing.
Those who participated and placed in the top five in all three events will be given a free sweatshirt.
Entry fee for all races $15 for adults before June 6th, and $20 the day of the race. Entry for the Pee Wee runs is $5.
