Budding history buffs from David A. Boody Junior High School paid a visit to their famous namesake’s resting place during a field trip to Green-Wood Cemetery.
Assistant Principal Eric Ierardi conducted a seminar in front of the family monument, which bears the remains of former New York City Mayor David Augustus Boody (1837-1930), before leading a tour of the historic, graveyard, 500 25th Street, where some of the borough’s most famous citizens are interred.
Boody, a Maine native, relocated to Brooklyn in 1862, became involved in local politics and was elected as a Democrat to the 52nd Congressional District in 1891.
After his resignation the following year, he became mayor of New York City and continued to reside in Brooklyn, serving, among his other posts, as president of the board of trustees of the Brooklyn Public Library from 1897 until his death.
Sixth graders from the Project Boost Program at Boody – also known as Intermediate School 228 for magnet Studies, 228 Avenue S – placed a wreath at their namesake’s grave.
