Saved by the cell

A knife-wielding wacko nearly stabbed a man in an 82nd Street robbery on Nov. 14, but the blade was miraculously deflected by the victim’s cellphone.

The victim told police that he and a lady friend had just exited a cab near 23rd Avenue at 3 am when the goon approached them from behind and drew his weapon.

“Give me your backpack,” the crook growled.

But the victim wasn’t giving it up without a fight, and the thief closed in with the knife, cops said. The knife-man initially tried to cut the bag from the man’s shoulder, but, when that didn’t work, he took a stab at his leg. Fortunately, the blade struck the man’s cellphone instead, leaving a small nick in his leg in lieu of a massive gash, according to police.

It was around this time that the victim decided his backpack wasn’t worth a leg and handed his property, police said. The thief then snatched a purse the woman was carrying, and fled into the night down 23rd Avenue, according to cops.

After softening him up, the crooks tossed the victim to the ground, snatched his phone, and took off running, cops said.

The foreman told police he locked up the yard between 23rd Street and Bay 34th Street at 3:30 pm, and returned later to find his stock of metal scaffolding materials severely depleted.

The foreman complained that this wasn’t the first time that site had been burglarized, and that someone had ripped him off on Oct. 17, according to police.
