Xaverian’s High School’s “Dr. Jack Kuhn Alumni Golf Outing” at the Richmond County Country Club, an all-day golf outing honoring the legacy of the beloved Bay Ridge resident and avid golfer, was successful in its endeavors to raise funds for the school’s Jack Kuhn Memorial Scholarship.
“As always, our alumni came through for the event, and for the school,” said Dr. Salvatore Ferrera, president of the school. “Xaverian has benefited from the most loyal alumni in this country; that includes colleges and universities as well.”
This in an era, Ferrara noted, of declining Catholic school enrollment, closing and “merged” schools, and financial hardship throughout the system and Xaverian, for the first time in anyone’s memory, has posted no rise in tuition for the upcoming (2008-2009) school year, which he credits to fervent alumni fundraising, from the signature Joe DiMaggio Award and Gala to alumni meets across the United States.
The Xaverian Alumni Association, General Robert Rose, and Lutheran Medical Center, in conjunction with Dr. Kuhn’s widow, Trudy Kuhn, decided that the outing — a celebration of golf and the memory of Dr. Kuhn, who died in 1994 — would be a fitting tribute to “such a caring and respected alumnus.”
