It was game, set and match for the Brooklyn Racquet Club this week, which shuttered its doors after nearly four decades of serving the borough.
The club, located at 2781 Shell Road, was scheduled to close July 22, after being open 37 years, according to manager Dmitry Novik.
Novik cited “a discrepancy between the partners” as a reason for the closure. He said there is no plan to open the club at a different location by the current owners. But coaches at the Brooklyn Racquet Club are trying to find investors to open another club.
“Twenty coaches lost their job and 500 kids have nowhere to play,” he said.
Novik, who has worked at the club for the last 10 years, said word came down from owner Beach Haven Management Corporation about the closure about two weeks ago. At press time, the management corporation could not be reached for comment.
“A lot of people are upset,” Novik said, noting that young and old enjoyed the club’s 11 courts. With the closing of Brooklyn Racquet, there are only three clubs left in the borough, holding a total of 25 courts, Novik said.
