Forget Occupy Wall Street — tomorrow’s Wall Streeters are occupying Brooklyn.
Hundreds of Brooklyn Law School students and faculty rallied against President Trump’s immigration policies Downtown on Thursday night, and it wasn’t just the do-gooding ones — even the corporate lawyers of tomorrow showed up to pledge their services in the fight.
“Some study corporate law and might not be an expert in immigration law, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t helping out in other areas,” said Muslim Law Student Association president Sayyid Choudhury, who plans on working for the Bank of America after graduating. “Everyone is invested in what’s going on and everyone is worried about what is happening.”
The march from Borough Hall to the federal courthouse started out as just a Muslim Law Student Association thing, but 18 other student associations also wanted to joined in, including the Legal Association for Women, the Christian Legal Society, and the Brooklyn Entertainment and Sports Law Society.
The solidarity from such an eclectic mix of groups shows that students from all walks of life are ready to stand up for Brooklynites’ rights, said Choudhury.
“Our goal is to demonstrate to the community that we haven’t forgotten them,” he said. “Especially as law students and lawyers and professors, we will stand up with them and will always be there for them.”
The rally was just the first of the students’ plans to fight Trump and his administration, said Choudhury. Next, they will host a series of public lectures on issues including immigration and religious freedom.
“Every week there’s a different topic that will be covered,” he said. “We are trying to do more.”
