Learn to avoid a dangerous fall – Tips on improving your balance and health

One of the most common causes of accidents inside and outside the home is accidental falling.

Learn how to improve your balance and prevent falls at Beth Israel Medical Center-Kings Highway Division, September 22 from 6:30-8 p.m. at 3201 Kings Highway between East 32nd Street and New York Avenue, First Floor Conference Room.

The program is free but advance registration is required on or before September 17.

“Whether getting up from bed or a chair, or tripping on a rug or an uneven pavement, or becoming unexpectedly weak in the knees, a fall can trigger a serious of events that can have serious consequences to one’s health and independence,” said program organizer Mary Pickering, LMSW, Geriatric Support and Outreach Services coordinator.

“The aging process can have a negative effect on balance, but falling is not an inevitable part of aging,” says Mike Mattia, PT, DPT, MS, director of Physical Therapy at the Kings Highway Division.

Mattia will demonstrate simple ways to check a person’s balance and show some exercises and discuss common-sense strategies that can help maintain balance and prevent falling.

For more information about support groups and caregiver meetings at Beth Israel-Kings Highway Division, call Ms. Pickering at 718-951-3065.
