Thousands of recovering addicts, their families, treatment providers and advocates from across the country will join together to form a human chain — a living symbol of recovery — and walk across the historic Brooklyn Bridge and proceed to a rally at City Hall Park, September 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to celebrate the promise of recovery.
The Recovery Rally will kick off A&E Television Network’s “The Recovery Project,” a wide-ranging, multi-year initiative to confront the stigma of addiction by creating widespread awareness about the urgency of the problem and the fact that addiction is a treatable, recoverable disease. Recovery delegates from all 50 states will share their inspiring stories about addiction and recovery.
The day will start with a gathering at Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn with performances by the band Crazy James — whose members are all in recovery — and stand-up comedian Mark Lundholm, a recovering addict who will MC the event, as well as free stretching classes and other pre-walk activities. The participants will then cross the Brooklyn Bridge and gather for a rally and concert in City Hall Park.
The Recovery Project — inspired by the incredible response from viewers, addicts, their families and the treatment community to the Emmy-nominated documentary series “Intervention” — will strive to make the public more aware of the scope of the addiction crisis and its broader impact on society, while raising funds to aid addiction research and help addicts connect with treatments that, while effective, are often inaccessible.
