Brooklyn Heights

Cheers to attorney Andrea Composto. The borough daughter was installed as the 33rd President of the Women’s Bar Association of New York State at the group’s annual convention on May 16.

She said, “I am humbled and honored to be installed as the president of the association. There are over 4,100 members in the association who fight for their clients and are motivated by what is just and fair for women in society.”

Our Standing O legal eagle graduated Albany Law School in 2002 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2003, as well as the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association and the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association.

Andrea is a partner in the firm that was founded in 1932 by her grandfather and dad, making her the third generation to wear the hooded regalia in her family.

Standing O wishes Andrea a long and successful reign.

Hippocratic hooray!

Brooklyn healers were honored by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation during a ceremony marking Doctors’ Day 2015 on May 20.

The local healers — including Dr. Lana Vardanian, medical director of ambulatory care services at Coney Island Hospital; Dr. Dorian Roye, pediatrician, Cumberland Diagnostic & Treatment Center; Dr. Roshan Sabar, assistant medical director at Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Dr. Maqsoodur Rahman, primary care practitioner at East New York Diagnostic & Treatment Center; Dr. Emmanuel Nwokedi, chief of radiation oncology at Kings County Hospital Center; and Dr. Jose Ruiz, attending pathologist at Woodhull Medical Center — were recognized for their leadership and commitment to advancing the mission of the public hospital system, and for providing the highest quality healthcare to New Yorkers.

“The physicians honored today are just a few of the outstanding doctors throughout our organization that provide high-quality, patient-centered health services every day to heal and empower their patients to live their healthiest lives possible. I am proud of their leadership, compassion, and motivation to provide our patients with the best experience possible,” said Dr. Ram Raju, president of HHC.

Thank you doctors — you keep our citizens healthy.

Books and more

The New Lots Library was awarded the NYC Neighborhood Library Award, which comes with a monetary award of $20,000, by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Charles H. Revson Foundation. The second-annual awards celebrated the crucial role of libraries in serving New York City’s diverse communities. New Lots, along with the other winners, was chosen out of more than 13,000 nominations.

Acclaimed authors Maira Kalman, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Jacqueline Woodson; Susan Hildreth, former director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services; Dutton Children’s Books publisher Julie Strauss-Gabel; and Maya Wiley, Counsel to Mayor Bill
Deblasio
were among the judges.

Neighborhood resident Takora said of the branch, “I live in a very impoverished neighborhood. Every day is a struggle for everyone, but because of this place, we have access to the Internet and books and classes. This library helps people in our community better themselves and become a contributing part of society. Without this branch giving us the tools to do so, a lot of us would have no other way to get help or find things available to us.”
