‘Locks of Love’ in Coney Island

‘Locks of Love’ in Coney Island

When you’re tangling with a 21−inch pony tail all day, every day, your hair can become a burden.

Yet Coney Island teen Mariela Villatoro knows that one’s burden can become a blessing to sick children whose treatments have robbed them of their hair.

That’s why Villatoro donated her silken mane to Locks of Love, a non−profit company that provides hair pieces to needy children throughout the country.

With the help of hairdresser Linda Braudermann and Coney Island’s Salt and Sea Mission, Villatoro offered up a part of herself to the less fortunate, Pastor Debbie Santiago explained.

“I asked her that when she wanted to cut her hair would she consider donating it to Locks of Love,” said Santiago. “I knew there were plenty of children who could put all of this beautiful hair to good use.”

Villatoro didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely,” she said. “I want to share.”

The donation was painless and ended up quite fashionable for Villatoro thanks to Braudermann’s scissor skills.

The 21−inch pony tail was then sent to Locks of Love’s Florida headquarters, where it was made into high−quality hair prosthetics.

Villatoro’s donation will undoubtedly help return a sense of self−confidence that children will need during this trying time, Santiago said.
