Marking its thirty-third year of providing Brooklyn seniors with an excellent educational program at minimal cost, the Institute for Retirees in Pursuit of Education will start its fall 2009 semesterSeptember 9, offering nearly 80 courses and lectures, live music and theatrical performances.
For an annual fee of $75, members, old and new, are encouraged to take as many courses as they wish.
A non-profit organization, which operates inside the Brooklyn College campus, IRPE welcomes retired as well as semi-retired adults of any age who enjoy exploring new skills, subjects, and ideas. While the courses yield no college credits, they range from art, music, and poetry, to painting, drama, and physical fitness.
IRPE fosters peer-learning and member-volunteers design and teach most of the courses and cultural activities in an informal, stimulating and non-competitive atmosphere. Several active Brooklyn College professors teach at the institute, as well as volunteers who want to share their expertise with others.
Some of the new courses offered this semester include Pre-Columbian Civilizations in Mexico, Tissot’s Life of Christ, Escape from the Holocaust, and A Rich Musical Tapestry. Other classes, such asInternational Folk Dance and Learning Bridge are back by popular demand.
An update on the genocide in Darfur and reflections on the nature of Futurism are part of the fall’s series of lectures. Day-to-day topics such as health, money management, painting, music, and current political events are part of the fall curriculum.
