Lyft is being so chill this weekend.
Ride-sharing service Lyft is offering free rides to Brooklyn residents destined for designated cooling stations around the borough during this weekend’s expected heat wave.
The transit company’s super cool offer is currently in effect and ends Sunday at midnight. It provides straphangers who plug the code NYCCOOL19 into Lyft’s ride-hailing app with two rides valued at $15 or less to select locations, which include:
• Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch: 10 Grand Army Plaza
• Brooklyn Public Library, Ulmer Park Branch: 2602 Bath Aven.
• Brooklyn Public Library, Stone Avenue Branch: 581 Mother Gaston Blvd.
• Wayside Tompkins Park NSC: 550 Greene Ave.
• JASA Scheuer House of Coney Island: 3601 Surf Ave.
The free rides coincide with a searing heat wave expected to cook the borough from late Friday through Sunday, when temperatures are expected to soar up to 99 degrees, according to the Weather Channel.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a state of emergency that began Friday morning and ends Sunday at midnight, and requires city government offices to limit their energy use, while putting health and emergency workers on high alert. Owners of office buildings 100 feet or taller will further be required to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.
“We are about to enter a heat emergency, and must do all we can to keep New Yorkers safe,” said de Blasio. “The City government is limiting its energy use to reduce strain on the electrical grid, and now private office buildings will also have to do their part.”
Earlier this week, southern Brooklyn neighborhoods Coney Island, Gravesend, and Bath Beach suffered loss of power for several hours Wednesday morning, and a representative for utility provider Con Edison at the time warned Kings County residents to be wary of additional blackouts as temperatures continue to soar throughout the week.
“We expect that there could be service outages,” the power company spokesman told Pix11 News.
City pools will also stay open an extra hour Friday through Sunday, operating from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to help New Yorkers beat the heat.
Lyft’s offer also applies to the cooling centers in Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.
