Make a clean save for Haitian earthquake victims

Haiti’s quake victims have their own personal “Mr. Cleans” in Red Hook merchants Rob Schnabel and Matt Vosburgh.

The co-owners of Bakline Rugby — a sportswear and lifestyle company on Richards Street between Verona and King streets — are waging a grassroots effort to heighten awareness to the unrecognized need for personal hygiene in the wake of the disaster, which has displaced people from their homes and ravaged water supplies on the devastated Caribbean island.

Their campaign is simple: a $20 donation — all of which provides a hygiene package containing shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, hand sanitizer, anti-perspirant to an earthquake victim.

You get a Bakline “Rebuild Haiti” T-shirt — and the comfort of knowing you helped.

Schnabel, Vosburgh and student volunteers from New York University filled Haiti-bound boxes on April 10, then shipped the CARE packages to the town of Jacmel in southern Haiti where they will be distributed by Carroll Gardens resident Jessica Mason, who plans to live there for a year to help with the recovery operations.

“Our goal is to assist 1,000 survivors by mid-April,” said Vosburgh, adding that the campaign was “more than a simple donation” because it helped “in renewing the spirits of a survivor who, in turn, are renewing their own country.”
