Cops cuffed a man on Wednesday after he turned himself in for brutally assaulting a woman while trying to rape her in Williamsburg on New Year’s Day.
The suspect allegedly punched the 26-year-old victim in the back of her head inside a S. Second Street apartment building around 5:30 am on Jan. 1, before getting on top of her and attempting to rip off her underwear, according to police.
But the woman fought back, and the man fled the building towards Marcy Avenue, according to authorities, who said the suspect lives a block away from the scene on S. Third Street.
Police slapped the 30-year-old man with charges including attempted rape, sex abuse, and forcible touching after he walked into the 90th Precinct station house and surrendered himself, according to officials.
The latest incident came roughly three months after another creep, whom cops are still searching for, violently sexually assaulted a separate victim in Williamsburg.
That villain in October, allegedly forced himself inside a 27-year-old woman without her permission on Richardson Street between Humbolt and N. Henry streets, according to the victim. But cops, citing grainy surveillance footage of the incident, said they are investigating it as an attempted rape, because the video does not explicitly show the man’s penis entering the woman’s vagina.
And although authorities did not classify either incident as a rape, the number of rapes still spiked across Brooklyn over the last 12 months, with victims reporting a total of 540 in 2018, 16.6 percent more than the 463 reported in 2017, according to statistics from the district attorney’s office.
