A 27-year-old man was shot in the leg during a terrifying confrontation with three masked muggers in Bath Beach last week.
The victim told police that he was nearing the corner of 17th Avenue and Bath Avenue at 11:15 p.m. November 18 when three unidentified men sporting ski masks and gloves approached him.
One of the men reportedly pulled a gun and pistol-whipped the victim, officials said. Seconds later a second suspect pulled his weapon and let one round go, striking the victim in the lower leg.
The suspects robbed the victim of $600 in cash and the gold chain that hung off his neck, cops were told. They were last seen fleeing the area in a dark colored car.
The victim reportedly took himself to an area hospital for treatment.
As of this writing investigators were still looking into the shooting.
Sources, however, said that no one heard the gunshot.
“We’re also not sure if [the victim] resisted or if he provoked them,” the source said.
Deputy Inspector John Sprague, the commanding officer of the 62nd Precinct, said that such a violent mugging is almost unheard of in his command.
“This is very odd for us,” he said. “For the last couple of years we haven’t had anything like someone getting shot out in the street like that.”
As of November 15, robberies in the 62nd Precinct had dropped by 25 percent. Overall felony crime in the command has fallen by 11 percent.
