Marine Park has gone to the dogs %u2013 complete with a wag-nificent awards ceremony.
Man’s best pal offered a woof of approval and enjoyed an afternoon of sportsmanship at the emerald empire as the annual Doggie Olympics got underway, raising $1,000 for the Visions Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
The fur flew as more than 20 canine contestants challenged mettle in 22 fun-filled competitions, designed to bring out their skillful, lovable and obedient side; among them, “Best Trained to Sit”; “Longest, Shortest & Bushiest Brushed Tail”; and “Frisbee Catch/Pounce.”
Owners had a chance to share the spotlight with their pets in such entries as “Doggie/Owner Dance,” “Doggie/Owner Non-Athletic Trick”; and “Best Doggie/Owner Match in Looks, Attitude & Style.”
The four-legged athletes were awarded medals during a post-contest ceremony, sponsored by the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions, which will also donate $500 to a school project for a Canarsie public school that will be selected from DonorsChoose.org.
The light-hearted day ended with a dramatic finish as a pair of returning favorites jockeyed back and forth down to the wire. Daisy “the friendliest pit bull you’ll ever meet,” who belongs to the Molina family from Mill Basin, edged out the Gallagher’s collie Casey from Old Mill Basin by 20 points to win the gold medal. Jude, a rottweiler who hails from the Rudik household in Sheepshead Bay, was awarded third place.
The hound-tastic triumvirate netted nine, eight and seven ribbons each, respectively.
