Many are up the creek without a park

A large group of North Brooklyn parks advocates marched on Saturday to call attention to the open space they say the city promised them in the 2005 rezoning but has largely not delivered.

Pointedly entitled “Where’s My Park Day?”, the protest was a pointed response to “It’s My Park Day,” the citywide bi−annual celebration of its parks. Put together by Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG) and the Greenpoint Waterfront Association for Parks and Planning (GWAPP), the protest took the form of a “ghost tour” of not−yet−existent parks that protesters claim should be built by now.

Specifically, advocates – which included Assemblyman Joseph Lentol and representatives from Council Member David Yassky’s office – staged rallies at: Bushwick Inlet Park (N. 9th to Quay Street on Kent Avenue); WNYC Transmitter Park (Greenpoint Avenue at the water’s edge); and a site currently owned by the MTA (66 Commercial Street on Newtown Creek).
