Inspirational speeches, a candle-lighting ceremony and a 21-gun salute helped pay tribute to the sacrifices of the dead during a 9/11 memorial at Marine Park.
The vigil, coordinated by State Senator Marty Golden and held at the Field House off Fillmore Avenue, united local patriots in prayer and song as, against the skirl of bagpipes, they tried to reconcile the nation’s grief on the seventh anniversary of the World Trade Center terror attacks.
Two bunches of balloons – one consisting of nine balloons and the other of 11 – were released to mark the memories of the lives lost, as pipers from Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road, provided a solemn serenade.
“We are the people, who are still here on this earth, entrusted with the responsibility to never let the world forget what happened on the morning of September 11, 2001,” said Golden, adding, “So, every year, we will gather in our part of the world, Brooklyn, New York, with that as our mission.”
