Someone is having fun with Photoshop and Borough President Marty Markowitz’s mug.
Political watchdogs and Beep supporters were buzzing about fliers and stickers recently found circulating around Greenpoint that seemed to be an advertising campaign for Markowitz’s bid for Mayor.
But the ads bordered on the bizarre and depicted the smiling borough cheerleader holding the Earth in his two hands. He’s standing in front of the slogan reading “Marty For Life.”
On the bottom reads, “End term limits.”
One would think this campaign laughable, until you’re reminded that Markowitz is no stranger to puns. Don’t forget he’s the same guy who spearheaded the “Lighten Up Brooklyn” campaign and ordered the creation of highway signs that read, “Leaving Brooklyn? Fugghetaboutit!”
While the ad itself is peculiar, so is another photo found tacked onto a pole in McCarren Park showing what appears to be Markowitz helping a worker paste the ad onto the side of a building.
The ads were posted online by blogger Miss Heather and later carried by Gothamist.com. Since they were posted on April 7 and 8, one can immediately rule out an April Fool’s Day joke, unless that charming holiday is treated differently in cyber-space.
“Congestion pricing is toast, and so is Bloomberg’s ‘legacy,’ so let’s start talking about the city’s next mayor,” Gothamist scribes wrote. “Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz says he’s not yet made up his mind about running, but, judging from this peculiar photo, eliminating mayoral term limits must be at the top of his agenda. Or is “Marty for Life” just an innocent campaign slogan?”
It’s neither, said officials from the Borough President’s office, who were just as surprised as we were by the blog posts.
Neither the ad nor the photo of Marty putting one of the ads up were sanctioned by the borough president, they said.
