Add Borough President Markowitz’s voice — and his topless physique — to the chorus of opponents who are hot under the swim trunks at the city’s decision to close the “Double-D” public pool in Gowanus for budgetary reasons this summer.
On Sunday, Markowitz will don his trunks for a protest — “Don’t worry, no Speedo!” his press aide said — at the pool, which will remain closed this summer so that the city can save $200,000 — which represents three-millionths of the city budget.
Councilmembers Steve Levin (D–Williamsburg) and Letitia James (D–Fort Greene) will join the 10 am rally, though it is unclear whether the hunky Levin or the visually arresting James will doff any duds.
Markowitz said he was appalled that the city claimed that the pool, which is on Douglass Street at Nevins Street, is in an industrial area when it is in walking distance to the Gowanus and Wyckoff Gardens public housing projects.
Close to 40,000 people used the pool last summer, as The Brooklyn Paper reported when it broke the pool-closure story last week.
Since the story broke, at least two online campaigns have been launched, and Levin has promised to fight to save the watering hole.
Other city pools will open on June 29.
