Friends of Historic New Utrecht welcomed the Jazz Big Band and Jazz Ensemble from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, who performed the repertory of seminal jazz figures such as Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk, as well as the works of lesser known figures and original compositions as.
The band and ensemble were led by Paul Corn, an adjunct professor at the Brooklyn College Conservatory and assistant principal for the performing arts at Susan E. Wagner High School in Staten Island.
Continuing in its services of free concerts at the Parish House, 1831 84th Street, May 17 at 7:30 p.m., there will be a performance by the Bella Voce Singers, a Brooklyn-based women’s choral group and the student voices of the Visitation Academy Cabaret Troup.
Bella Voce Singers is a 32-member multigenerational group dedicated to excellence in singing and performing a diverse repertoire including works of contemporary composers.
The Cabaret Troup is part of the performing arts program at Visitation Academy in Bay Ridge, directed by Brian Worsdale. Their program is entitled “Encore: The Broadway Music of Our Time.”
Corn formerly headed the music program at Fort Hamilton High School and has performed concerts with Friends of Historic New Utrecht in the past.
