A local elected official is asking parents for their opinions on mayoral control.
City Councilmember Bill de Blasio’s office is circulating surveys questioning parents on the effectiveness of the public school system while it has been under total control of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The surveys are timely since the state law authorizing mayoral control is up for renewal next year. Beginning in January, the state Assembly and Senate will review mayoral control and decide whether it should be renewed, revamped or completely eliminated.
Reps for de Blasio say the surveys will allow the councilman to understand parents’ thoughts as city politicians lobby for the form of school governance they think will be the most effective.
The two-page survey features eight questions focusing on the quality of parental input under mayoral control.
Freya Riel, de Blasio’s legislative director, attended a recent meeting of District 20’s Community Education Council (CEC) to discuss the importance of filling out the surveys.
“It’s an opportunity to provide feedback on how your input has been under this school governance,” she explained.
