MBNA, News 12 tangle for charity

Big-hearted waterfront activists took to the field and emerged winners when they squared off against the local press during a benefit softball game in Manhattan Beach.

Fit and fightin’ members of the newly-formed Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Association (MBNA) locked friendly, but competitive, horns with a crew from Channel 12 at Manhattan Beach Park, Oriental Boulevard at Falmouth Street, to raise money for the service and research foundation Autism Speaks.

Last year, Autism Speaks committed “an unprecedented” $30 million in new research funds for causes, prevention, treatment and cures for the complex brain disorder, making it the nation’s top private funder of autism research, according to its Website.

Autism inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and can be accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges.

The MBNA team won the game, 13-8.
