To celebrate
the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which begins at sundown Friday,
Nov. 29, and continues through Saturday, Dec. 7, giant menorahs
will be lit daily near Borough Hall and at Grand Army Plaza,
accompanied by music. There will be gifts for the children, free
menorahs and candles to take home, and hot latkes will be served.
As in past years, a giant Chabad menorah will be lit outside
the state Supreme Court building at Court and Montague streets
– at 2 pm Fridays, 6 pm Saturday, and 5 pm Sunday through Thursday.
Borough President Markowitz will light the menorah on Monday.
The Grand Army Plaza menorah will be lit 3:30 pm Fridays, 7:30
pm Saturday, and 6 pm Sunday through Thursday.
Hanukkah commemorates the victory of Jewish rebels against Syrian
oppression in the Jewish state in Palestine 2,300 years ago,
and a miracle in which a one-day supply of oil lasted eight days.
