Two of the children injured during a high-holy day fire that killed their 8-year-old brother late last month remain in critical condition, according to source with friends close to the family.
“The family still needs a lot of our prayers,” said the person, who requested anonymity. “They are not out of the woods by any means. Everyone should still pray.”
Of the five children of Jacob and Hannah Krasny who survived the fire at their Avenue P home, three have been released from Staten Island University Hospital North, according to the source.
The Krasny’s 3-year-old son Yitzchok, remains in Long Island Jewish Children’s Hospital, where he is being weaned off a respirator, the person said.
Eighteen-month-old Etel, the youngest child, remains in critical condition on a respirator in the Staten Island hospital.
The released children include a 5-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy.
Fire officials said the Sept. 29 blaze began in the kitchen of the three-story house, near E. 12th Street, when a hot plate, called a ‘blech,’ used during holidays and the Sabbath to reheat food, ignited a wooden countertop.
Krasny desperately tried to save his family, but neither he nor firefighters could reach Avigdor, who was trapped in a third-floor room.
Three hundred people came to mourn the boy at a funeral held the following Sunday at Bais Yisroel Torah Center on Ocean Parkway.
Synagogues around the neighborhood have joined together to raise money for the family and find them a permanent home. Donation inquiries can be made at Bais Yisroel Torah Center, 1821 Ocean Parkway.
