An impromptu fireworks show in Midwood may have sparked a two-alarm blaze that ripped through an East Third Street home on July 4, police and firefighters said.
FDNY officials said that the fire broke out at the home between Avenue N and Ryder Avenue at 11 pm and took borough smokeaters about an hour to bring under control.
No injuries were reported.
Witnesses said that the fire erupted in the top floor of the Queen Anne style-home and quickly extended to the attic. Flames were punching their way through the roof when 106 firefighters showed up to combat the blaze — their arrival delayed by six minutes because they were first given the wrong address.
Fire marshals investigated the possibility that the blaze was sparked by fireworks that someone had set off on the next block. The exact cause of the fire remained unclear by late Tuesday.
Cops from the 66th Precinct, which covers this section of Midwood, said that five firework seizures occurred inside their precinct boundaries on July 4, but none of them took place near this the fire.
