Minor change means big inconvenience on small Cobble-Carroll streets

Residents of three tiny streets in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, long accustomed to separating their recyclables, will now have to separate the days on which they put them out.

The Department of Sanitation announced this week that starting on April 19, residents of Centre Street and Dennett and Verandah places, will put out their mixed paper on Tuesdays and their metal, glass and plastics on Fridays.

Previously, all recyclables were left curbside on Fridays only.

Collection of regular trash on the three vest-pocket streets will remain the same: Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Sanitation Department says the change is necessary so that the agency an use smaller, more eco-friendly trucks to service those skimpy streets.

The change will affect 50 homes — and some residents were less than thrilled.

“I’m rather sceptical about the whole thing,” said one Verandah Place resident, who declined to give her name. “I separate my trash, but I’ve seen [Sanitation workers] throw in my paper trash with the regular trash.”
