To commemorate the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture’s 100th anniversary, BSEC will hold an Anniversary Lecture at 4 p.m., May 31 at the Poly Prep Auditorium, 49 Prospect Park West between First and Second streets.
The lecture will introduce acclaimed moral philosopher Susan Neiman, author of “Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-Up Idealists.” As Americans approach the most dramatic political choice they will make in many decades, they face far more fundamental questions than 30-second spots about red telephones or heated rhetoric.
Which values divide us? Which ones can we share? In her book “Moral Clarity,” Neiman offers answers, and shows that the drive for idealism that has surfaced so dramatically in the current election is far more than abstraction or stump-speech rhetoric. It is a potent driving force with a long history of effecting change that has undiminished potential for grappling with the most controversial and pressing issues of our time, including the fight against terrorism and the war in Iraq.
Neiman has taught at Yale University, Tel Aviv University, and the Humboldt University of Berlin, and is currently director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, Germany. She is the author of three previous books, most recently “Evil in Modern Thought.”
The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, a humanist religious organization dedicated to improving the ethical quality of relationships in personal lives and in the world, was incorporated in Brooklyn in 1907.
