As if the world has nothing better to do.
It is the Obama Administration’s turn to be ringmaster in the Gravest Show on Earth, better known as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — a ceaseless angst-extravaganza which has compelled world leaders to pussyfoot around the Palestinians, and admonish Israel, for the past 50 years.
The Oval Office must arm itself with extra-strength aspirin in preparation for a new round of “indirect” peace talks between the pair of adversaries. Plus, reinforce itself with today’s facts: Israel is here to stay while Palestinians continue to decay, unless they change their destructive course and improve the national vision for their society which has been left to rot by a succession of corrupt leaderships for decades — first by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and now by the terror-mongering ruling party, Hamas, which “combines Palestinian nationalism with Islamic fundamentalism” states the Council on Foreign Relations.
The paramilitary organization, whose bombing sorties dashed the 1996 election hopes of Labor party leader Shimon Peres, is on record as having killed more than 500 people in over 350 separate terror acts since 1993.
Under Hamas, Palestinians continue to promote their abject reputation as the planet’s foremost welfare state.
In its January 8 report, “US Foreign Aid to the Palestinians,” the Congressional Research Service documents that the US government has “committed over $3.5 billion in bilateral assistance” since 1994 when Palestinians were allowed to self-rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. That in addition to American taxpayers forking over approximately $400 million a year in “aid” since deadbeat PLO leader Yasser Arafat’s passing in 2004.
The cash transfusions have yielded no relief for the Palestinians, whose apathy is supplemented by a soaring unemployment rate which the Arab League places at 86 percent, and whose leaders have failed to provide proper homes, basic infrastructure or a competitive education for their constituents.
Hostile clashes between Hamas and political foe Fatah which have killed more than 600 Palestinians since the two factions began sparring in 2006, hardly inspire confidence for a better tomorrow; the Palestinians have even dubbed their civil war, Wakseh, meaning the shame and ruin of self-inflicted destruction.
The White House’s hopes for a “viable” independent Palestinian state are only realizable if Palestinians stop teaching their children to revile Israel, halt their suicide bombers and demonstrate their nationalism and desire for peace by repairing their land instead of destroying it.
Naturally, each new US administration in recent years has yearned to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians. It is, after all, foreign policy’s most coveted, if seemingly unattainable, accolade.
A bright new day will dawn only when Palestinians put aside their jealousy, boot their debauched leadership and give themselves a fighting chance by combating terror and incitement against its only real ally in the troubled region — Israel.
Until such time, we can rely on the insight of courageous apostates, such as Mosab Hassan Yousef — disowned son of jailed Hamas co-founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, Christian convert, former Israeli spy and author of “Son of Hamas” — who states bluntly: “Jews should be aware: You will never, but never have peace with Hamas. Islam, as the ideology that guides them, will not allow them to achieve a peace agreement with the Jews.”
