Never forget
Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (D–Sheepshead Bay) again hosted his 18th annual Holocaust Memorial Creative Arts contest at Kingsborough Community College’s Marine Academic Center.
As speaker after speaker warned that the world must “never forget” the 6 million Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis, the assemblyman honored the student winners, as well announcing that he was able to provide $700,000 in state funds that will benefit Kingsborough’s existing Holocaust Center.
Holocaust survivor Jehuda Lindenblatt; Peter Cohen, interim president at Kingsborough Community College; and Michelle Anderson, president of Brooklyn College, offered opening remarks. David Greenfield, chief executive officer at Met Council; and City Councilmembers Kalman Yeger, Mark Treyger, and Chaim Deutsch offered greetings, and Marisa Hollywood, assistant director of the Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College, received a resolution.
For this year’s exhibit: Cruel Correspondence: Anti-Semitic Postcards 1895 – 1930,” Met Council provided a photographic display of Holocaust survivors creating pottery.
The Edward R. Murrow High School String Orchestra and the Chamber Winds and Madrigal Choir provided entertainment.
Winners this year included Leah Portnoy of the Hebrew Language Academy, who aced second place; first-place winners from Bay Academy; and third-place winners from the Amity School.
Co-sponsors of the event were the Manhattan Beach Jewish Center, the Holocaust Memorial Committee, the Lena Cymbrowitz Foundation, and Project Witness.
