A veteran administrator has joined a local volunteer parents’ group.
District 20’s Community Education Council (CEC) welcomed Sylvia LaCerra to the group.
LaCerra previously served as principal of P.S. 200 Benson School at 1940 Benson Avenue. When word spread of her retirement last school year, the CEC took note and thought LaCerra would be a great addition because of her experience and vast knowledge of the school system’s inner-workings.
LaCerra was appointed to the CEC by the borough president’s office, which selects two members for each school district’s council. The borough president’s appointees need not have children currently enrolled in public schools.
As a member of District 20’s CEC, LaCerra will advocate for public schools in Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton and Borough Park.
“I’m very honored and very proud to announce our newest member,” CEC President Laurie Windsor said at the group’s recent meeting.
LaCerra “has been on the forefront of education in this district and I’m so proud to have her in the forefront here,” said state Assemblyman Peter Abbate.
LaCerra said the transition from school principal to the CEC is a natural one.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” she said. “I feel as if I must stay connected to the schools. It’s been such a big part of my life, such a wonderful part.”
“I want to continue to serve the children,” she added. “I thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so.”
