Lutheran Medical Center and its clinical partner in cardiac care, The Mount Sinai Hospital, recognized Brooklyn’s newest STEMI Center. More than 60 health professionals attended the reception including cardiac experts, executive staff, area paramedics and FDNY EMS personnel.
“When a heart attack strikes, a nearby STEMI center can mean the difference between life and death,” said Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and chief executive officer of Lutheran HealthCare, 150 55th Street in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. “STEMI designation at Lutheran means Brooklyn residents now have immediate access to urgent intervention right in their own neighborhood. And by partnering closely with Mount Sinai, our community benefits from the latest technology and the expertise of cardiologists from both hospitals, 24 hours a day.”

FDNY paramedics deliver about 7,500 cardiac arrests to area hospitals annually and to increase survival rates, patients suffering the crushing pain of a heart attack will only be transported to a designated receiving hospital for primary PCI. The goal of the procedure is to quickly restore blood flow to the heart muscle within 90 minutes of the patient’s arrival.
Lutheran’s new cardiac initiative is a multidisciplinary effort that brings together cardiac specialists from Lutheran and Mount Sinai.
In 2005, Lutheran opened the May Ellen and Gerald Ritter Diagnostic Cardiology Center, a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization suite (cath lab) to help patients diagnose heart disease. With N.Y.S. approval to perform primary PCI, and FDNY STEMI Center designation, Lutheran can detect heart disease at an early stage to avoid an attack, and also provide the latest urgent care after an attack.
