Fresh from last year’s new album, “Walk It Off,” the Minneapolis-based quartet Tapes ’n Tapes will slam into Brooklyn with its hard-driving drum-backed twangy indie rock sound for a must-see concert at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday, Feb. 26.
Tapes ’n Tapes albums typically sound more like a recorded live performance than something crafted in a canned studio — and when the band performs live, audiences get a rare treat.
“When we play live, a lot of nuances do come out,” said singer and guitarist Josh Grier. “We explore different places that the songs can go every night. The songs might be different because we’re in a different mood. Otherwise it gets a little boring.”
Another way to keep it interesting is having a different band member draw up the set list every night.
“We generally try to have a pretty even mix of old songs and the new ones,” he said. “It keeps all of us excited and on our toes.”
But Grier promised that some classics, like “The Dirty Dirty” and “Insistor,” which epitomizes the band’s fast-paced drum and guitar interplay, are always on the playlist — and both feature Grier’s drawl, which sounds like a beautiful, dejected lullaby. It’s a perfect counterpoint to the band’s bottom-heavy sound.
