Coney’s white sands were pristine putty in the creative clutches of budding Michealangelos, who went to work molding their masterpieces during the annual sand-sculpting contest, sponsored by Astella Development Corporation.
Armed with pails, shovels and plenty of elbow grease, beach artisans assembled on the stretch off the Boardwalk at West 12th Street, transforming the beachfront into a landscape of breath-taking art pieces, some whimsical, others classic, but all representative of Brooklyn’s innovative streak.
The winners were: Frank Russo, whose castle won first prize in the Adult category; Rayna Ramon, who wowed with the crowd with her sculpture of SpongeBob SquarePants in Child; Mia and Kayla Sumtila, whose canine creation clinched Mixed Group; Timara and Cassi Deshog, whose Frog aced Child Group; and Evan Schlossberg and Erin Osher, whose sea serpent was awarded first place in Adult Group.
Winners received $400 in addition to bragging rights.
The outdoor fest was part of Coney Island’s program of summer special events.
