Every Sunday morning, a multiethnic crew of adults leads a multiethnic group of kids for two hours of ethical consciousness−raising at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, across the street from Prospect Park.
They sing and make art together, jam in the playground, have philosophical discussions, and they learn, according to Audrey Kindred, director of the Children’s Sunday Assembly program, “to strengthen our inner moral compass, to be aware of what’s going on between us and inside of us.”
That awareness will be on display at the Brooklyn Ethical Culture Society’s “Nurturer’s Day Festival” on Mother’s Day, May 10. Starting time is 11 a.m., but attendees are welcome to arrive at 10:30 a.m. for mingling.
The Nurturer’s Day Festival will highlight the “daily nurturing acts of Earth — the proverbial Mother Earth,” says Kindred.
The evening before, BSEC will host the performing arts company JUNGLEDOM, featuring the African dance company Kamutshima (“From the Heart”), and music by Boura Mpela and Otis Cotton. JUNGLEDOM features Simba Yangala, another key staff member of the Children’s Sunday Assembly.
Tickets are $15−$25 (sliding scale), and children with cushions get in for $5.
The Nurturer’s Day Festival is free and will include community art, music, a “Healing Arts Circle,” potluck meal, and lots of fun.
