Cyclones players came out on the short end of 14-inning World Series Game One when Jeurys Familia, who never played an inning for Brooklyn, blew a save opportunity with one out in the ninth, allowing a booming, game-tying home run to Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon.
The game remained tied until the 14th when Bartolo Colon, who has been pitching in the majors since before the Cyclones even existed, allowed a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to Eric Hosmer, scoring Alcides Escobar and earning the Royals the win.
Still, there were many highlights for the Brooklyns during the game. Cyclone second baseman Daniel Murphy continued his hot post-season run, notching two more hits. And center fielder Juan Lagares was impressive in his first World Series appearance, picking up a big hit in his nine-pitch, two-out battle with flame-thrower Kelvin Herrera. Lagares stole second and then scored when Royals first baseman Hosmer couldn’t handle a hot shot by Cyclone shortstop Wilmer Flores, giving the Mets a 4–3 lead.
But without the Cyclones all-time saves leader on the roster (in fact, Powers last played professionally in 2011), Terry Collins — who never worked in Brooklyn — opted for Familia, and the rest is history.
Cyclones sensation Michael Conforto contributed a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but was later replaced by Lagares for defensive purposes. In the first inning, Conforto had a chance to catch what became an Escobar inside-the-park home run, but a miscommunication with journeyman center fielder Yoenis Cespedes resulted in the falling between the two and bouncing away.
Our boys look to even the series tonight in Kansas City, with right-hander Hansel Robles hoping to get a chance to show his stuff.
Technically speaking, no Cyclone pitchers gave up a run, so we could actually consider this a 2–0 win for our boys from Brooklyn.
