Dedicated volunteers from Concord Village Compost Committee were honored for starting a composting project in Concord Village, one of New York State’s largest cooperative developments.
Assemblywoman Joan Millman and members of Concord Village’s board of directors were on-hand to celebrate the group’s hard work. The composting project was made possible by a New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods award from Citizens Committee for New York City.
“Composting is a creative and natural way to recycle waste and improve our immediate urban environment,” said Peter H. Kostmayer, president of Citizens Committee. “We are delighted to help the residents create a sustainable, green project to reduce waste and improve the environment in their community.”
“The work of Concord Village Compost Committee demonstrates that every Brooklynite can find ways to reduce waste and help keep our borough clean and green,” said Millman. “I congratulate the 20 hardworking volunteers who created this project, and Citizens Committee for helping to make it possible.”
“We are very excited about the success of our composting project,” said Margaret Butler, a volunteer with Concord Village Compost Committee. “It is rewarding to know that we are minimizing the waste stream produced by Concord Village, and we would not have been able to begin composting without the funding from Citizens Committee.”
Concord Village Compost Committee’s project is one of the 125 neighborhood improvement projects funded by Citizens Committee’s New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods Awards.
Awards, ranging from $500 to $3,000, are made to resident-led groups to bring neighbors together and improve their communities.
Past award recipients have organized tenants to advocate for better housing conditions, established a youth council to get involved in the local political process, and created green markets to provide healthy food that was unavailable prior to their efforts.
