A gunman shot and killed a man when he opened fire on two people in a Canarsie alley on Wednesday afternoon.

The sound of gunshots echoed across E. 78th Street between Glenwood Road and Flatlands Avenue at 3:22 pm, horrified witnesses told police. One of the victims died at the scene. The second man, who was shot in the arm, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where he was listed in stable condition after treatment.

Cops hadn’t released the murder victim’s name or provide a motive for the fatal attack by Wednesday afternoon.

“Right now the detectives aren’t too sure what this was over,” said one police source. “Right now they’re talking with witnesses and trying to work out a time line.”

The victim apparently lived near where he was killed: minutes after the shooting, the victim’s inconsolable mother could be found at the crime scene, crying over her fallen son, witnesses said.

This is the third murder to take place in Canarsie this year. At this time last year, seven murders had taken place, according to NYPD statistics.
