Outgoing top cop welcomes new cop

Flatbush and Midwood got its first peek at its new top cop on Wednesday — and said goodbye to an old friend.

The 70th Precinct Community Council welcomed Deputy Inspector Eric Rodriguez, 43, at their final meeting before the summer break.

Rodriguez started his new job on Monday.

Rodriguez led the 68th Precinct since 2006 and before that, the Staten Island resident was commanding officer of Transit District 3 in Manhattan and was the executive officer of the Ninth Precinct, covering the East Village and Alphabet City in Manhattan.

He said he was ready for the challenge of manning a precinct that, by all accounts, gets more action than his old post.

“I’ve been around,” said Rodriguez. “I’ve dealt with everything in New York. I know what I’m walking into.”

“I was hoping it was Rodriguez,” said out-going precinct commander Ralph Monteforte in a farewell speech that drew a standing ovation.

Monteforte reflected on his time at the precinct, and admitted the 7-0 was not perfect.

“We make mistakes here sometimes,” Monteforte said. “But every time you call 911, the cop will risk his life trying to save yours.”
